Great Witley CE Primary School
At Great Witley CE Primary School, we recognise the importance of the impact and influence of the development in understanding of Fundamental British Values for children. We, therefore, aim to provide an education that enables children opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs through a greater understanding of the fundamental British Values:
democracy
rule of law
individual liberty
mutual respect
tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
We promote these values through all that we do. We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to British Society and to the world.
British Values in our PHSE Curriculum
At Great Witley we use Jigsaw as the foundation for our PHSE lessons.
How is each of the British Values included in a Jigsaw Lesson?
The British Values are promoted through the use of the Jigsaw Learning Charter. The Learning Charter is child-centred and aims to encourage children to work together and follow a set of ‘ground rules’ to create a safe, positive learning environment.
Democracy is evident across all puzzles within the Jigsaw PSHE 3-11 programme. Children have lots of opportunities for their voices to be heard through whole class, group or paired discussions.
The Rule of Law is evident in every Jigsaw lesson. We start by establishing a safe, comfortable environment in which to learn. The content allows for children to understand equality and their rights, to understand how both they should be treated, and how they should treat others.
Individual Liberty Jigsaw provides a structured programme of personal development to nurture the ‘whole child’ and increase learning capacity, underpinned by mindfulness philosophy and practice.
Mutual respect One of the key aspects of Jigsaw is how we enable and teach children to have respectful discussions on sensitive subjects.
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs The topics covered give children the opportunity to go beyond ‘tolerance’ to help children ‘celebrate difference’, their own individuality and that of others
