Six boys from Years 3 and 4 travelled to Tenbury Primary School to participate in the annual Under 9s six a side football tournament. Fourteen teams had entered and with only six fit players from Great Witley, the pressure was on.
In the group games, the team bonded magnificently and played some thrilling football. They beat Clifton B 5 - 0, Tenbury B 2 - 0 and Lindridge 2 - 0, drew with Martley A and Kimbolton A, but lost 1 - 0 to Brockhampton. Alfie Galvin, Zach Bowater, Adam Scurrell and Ollie Saunders scored some terrific goals and Ben Love and Jacob Edwards kept it tight in defence.
The quarter final against Martley B was a tense game and neither side could score so it was left to a penalty shoot out to decide which team progressed. Fantastic goalkeeping by Ollie Saunders and terrific penalties ensure the Great Witley team went through.
The semi final against Tenbury A was also nail biting. Again it was 0 - 0 at full-time. Try as they might, the lads could not score enough penalties to beat Tenbury, so missed out on an appearance in the final.
It was a pleasure to take the team to Tenbury to play in the tournament. Their sportsmanship and attitude were exemplary.
Many thanks to Mrs Bowater for her support, transport and refreshments.
